About Engagement 21

If the Church is committed to gaining traction in the 21st century, it needs to seriously lift its game.  This perception was underlined by a survey of 96 clergy and laity in both New Zealand and Australia in 2009.  The survey, reported in detail in this book, identified three key obstacles to mission: inadequate theology and ministry skills, preoccupation with old models of ministry, and a disproportionate focus on the Church's institutional life at the expense of its mission.

Engagement 21 challenges the Church to radically review its strategy of mission.  The bulk of its content sets out in snapshop form the key features of 126 creative endeavours in ministry at the grass roots.  In parishes and chaplaincies across Australia and New Zealand, fresh endeavours are being pioneered in spirituality and faith, in ministries of outreach to local communities, and in commitments to justice, peace and environmental stewardship.  All are part of a new paradigm of engagement with people and communities in the 21st century.

Built around a three-part biblical study on mission, Engagement 21 is an essential tool for strategic mission planning.  A copy should be in the hands of all engaged in church leadership, and part of a study programme in every parish, chaplaincy or other form of Christian community.

There is a Gospel to proclaim, its truth crucial to the life of this post-modern age.  New vessels are essential to convey this treasure.
