It’s Advent’s Eve – are the world’s children laughing'

25 October 2018

The anthology, A Child Laughs: Prayers of Justice and Hope (Mankin and Tirabassi, Pilgrim 2017) celebrates connecting creative people across national borders, as well as boundaries of race, ethnicity, age, ability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and educational or economic background. Participants in this book and two of Maren’s preceding ones included twenty-eight spiritual writers from Aotearoa New Zealand, inspiring her to visit Vaughan Park as a scholar in residence.

Using readings and insights from the book, Maren will reflect on hope and justice in our world in light of this year’s Advent, Christmas and Epiphany. A “hands-on” portion of the evening program will be an opportunity to write some personal prayers and community liturgy. Resources will be provided to invite local faith communities to create their own shared worship and discussion questions for the seasons coming.

A bi-vocational United Church of Christ pastor since 1980 in rural, seaport, urban and suburban United States, my focus now is writing, leading memoir, fiction and poetry workshops, and being a literacy educator with new immigrants and adults with developmental disabilities. I also lead interfaith programs on liturgical writing, creative worship, and congregational inclusivity and enjoy mentoring new authors to write and publish.
