A Fresh Interpretation of John 20:17: "Do not touch me"

20 September 2018

Over the last twenty centuries of Christianity, there has been a great variety of interpretations of the New Testament verse John 20:17, “Do not touch me, for I have not yet ascended.” Because it is a puzzling verse, most modern versions of the Bible delete “touch” and say, “Do not hold onto me, for I have not yet ascended.” This makes more sense: Mary should not hold onto Jesus, but should let him go so he can ascend. It may be more logical than “Do not touch,” but is it true to the text? Is this what John is actually trying to say? In this lecture, I will offer a fresh interpretation of the verse, taking linguistic and historical factors into account. I look forward to your company on the evening of 20th September.
